Uncategorized

Have you been feeling the blues lately? Been feeling like your life has no direction? Ask yourself this question: What OS would Jesus use? Why, Ubuntu Christian Edition! That’s right. If you think there isn’t enough spiritual firepower in your choice of desktop operating system, now you have an option. Well, you have an option if you happen to be Christian and have a favorable disposition towards Linux. Find out more about Ubuntu CE at […]

The state of the 2006 Linux desktop

Uncategorized

Interesting article over at DesktopLinux.com by Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols entitled The state of the 2006 Linux desktop. He notes a sudden rise of people running Linux on their laptops over the summer. My unscientific survey revealed that about a third of those desktops were running the newest Ubuntu, another third were running either openSUSE or SLED (SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop), and the final third were Freespire or Linspire. I also saw a scattering of Xandros […]

Linux is Beautiful, or Why Robert Scoble Needs to Take Another Look

Uncategorized

Robert Scoble wrote an entry about what he sees as a reason Linux won’t be adopted by the masses as their desktop operating system: the fonts. I couldn’t disagree more with him. I’m looking at Gnome via SUSE Linux 10.1 on an LCD screen, and gosh, darn it, these fonts are crisp, with subpixel anti-aliasing. My, they’re beautiful. But I’ll let you in on a little secret, I needed Microsoft’s help to make it all […]

Time to up that Ubuntu installation

Uncategorized

linux today is reporting that Ubuntu has updated it’s 6.06 version called dapper drake to 6.06.1. You can get a new CD for free from ShipIt. If you’re like some people and using the tiny Xubuntu distribution, you can grab that here. One theorizes that it fixes some of the problems people have been encountering, well, one hopes anyway. I’m going to download the main Ubuntu 6.06.1 and see what it does on my desktop. […]

two mixes to rule them all.

i finished up “electronica” an 80-minute mix the other day. tonight i’m hard at work on “avant garde” a mix of new classical music. i hope to have it completed by saturday, the 18th. the “electronica” mix turned out exceptionally well. i worked hard to mix together 14 songs and they hang well together. these are the first mixes i’ve done since my 9-11 mixes. i made three mix cds shortly after the attack on […]

there’s been a rash of articles lately about blogging. here’s a couple appearing today in salon [1] [2]. enjoy. as the semester draws to a close, this blog will probably go on hiatus. i’ll be busy with … life … this summer. the blog always feels slightly unreal, though there are plenty of readers my hit logs would attest. i’m working on a two mix series of CD mixes. the first, an electronic mix, is […]

can you believe.

i’m listening to greg brown tonight. can you believe this guy? his music is so good. i especially recommend his recent “covenant.” there was this article in the new york times this weekend about an 80’s revival — talking about the twenty year cycle of popular culture. the 70’s are passe and the 80’s are here. i’m so glad. the 70’s were such a down time for music, and the 80’s had such great things […]

i’m listening to chopin tonight. nocturnes. my brother came down to the city last weekend for a visit. had a good time. we wandered through various high-end audio stores. said brother recently spent a load on some new home theater gear. as he moves into 7-channel audio & video, i remain resolutely with 2-channel audio. movies are good, but personally i’m mostly interested in the fidelity of my music collection. the classical cd club convinced […]
