In New York City? Go volunteer to help Greenlight Bookstore!

Greenlight BookstoreGreenlight Bookstore was just a glimmer in Jessica Stockton Bagnulo and Rebecca Fitting’s imagination a year ago. Fast forward a year, and Greenlight Bookstore of Fort Greene, Brooklyn, is quickly becoming a reality. Over the past nine weeks, volunteers have been helping those two with installation of bookcases, general carpentry, and all the things that need to be done to open a bookstore. Opening a bookstore? Yes, indeed. What a splendid idea! You can follow the weekly action over at Brownstoner. Jessica and Rebecca also are tending the Greenlight Bookstore Blog. The latest news is that they’ve worked out a logotype. Or you can become a fan of the bookstore on Facebook.

They held a party a little over a year ago to launch the idea of the bookstore in the Fort Greene neighborhood, as was featured in this New York Times article. Independent bookstores are getting increasingly hard to find, but the ones that survive and the ones that have started have found their niche. The Greenlight Bookstore sits at 686 Fulton Street in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, New York. So if you’re interested in seeing a fledgling bookstore get off the ground, now’s the time to head over there and lend a hand.
