Maltese Cross Iowa City Tornado was in the F2 Category

Morning After 6, originally uploaded by psalakanthos.

The National Weather Service is reporting that the tornado that hit the heart of Iowa City last night was an F2 scale tornado with sustained winds of over 150 miles per hour. It cut through 3.5 miles at the heart of the city and was 1/3rd of a mile wide. Luckily, there were only a few minor injuries and no deaths. Story here. More about F-scale tornados here. All in all there were 5 or 6 tornados that touched down in the area last night.

Hey, glad you weren't blown away in the storm. I checked your site the morning after the storm and was happy to see you had posted.

Thanks, Brian. Yes, the damage was pretty bad. The tornado carved out a path 3.5 miles long and 1/3rd of a mile wide. People have been pretty busy already cleaning up, although it will take time. The buildings with the heaviest damage will certainly need to be rebuilt, but it's surprising how fast the rebound happens. I got back into town on Monday, and a lot of the debris and downed trees had already been cleaned up.

I noticed that most of the first pictures out from the storm showed heavily damaged frat/sorority houses. Is that where the most damage occurred, or where the reporters revealing a subtle bias?

No, it was mostly students that got hit because of the area the tornado went through, and that sorority house was one of the hardest hit.
