The MC Jack E Chocolate and Dennis DJ tracks come from the Rio Baile Funk compilation. This is an original folk music from the favelas of Brazil. It mixes Miami bass with ‘80s samples and shouted lyrics in Portuguese. I’ve been listening to Rio Baile Funk all summer and really love it.

The Roots and Gorillaz tracks come out of the increased amount of urban music I’ve been checking out lately. Modest Mouse was one of my favorite bands of 2004. Good News for People who love Bad News is an incredible album. I highly recommend it. My other favorite band from 2004 is Franz Ferdinand and their eponymous debut album. This album comes highly recommended.

M.I.A. is a newer discovery of mine from this year. M.I.A. is Maya Arul who is from Sri Lanka but is a political refugee in London. The New Order track is old but a good one. Niyaz is something I discovered when I was at Waterloo Records in Austin, Texas this past June. It is acoustic music with a Middle Eastern flavor. It’s a collaboration between the vocalist from Vas and a couple of guys from Axiom of Choice.

I selected a couple of choice Björk tracks for your enjoyment. The first Play Dead is an oldie but goodie from the early ‘90s. I’ve been meaning to put that one on a mix for a while, but I guess it’s been a while since I’ve sent out a mix for y’all. The second track Triumph of a Heart is from her latest album Medúlla, which is comprised entirely of vocal instrumentation. Very interesting and enjoyable to listen to.

Filling out the retinue of tracks is some more world music—Bia from Brazil, Zap Mama, and Gotan Project from France. The Tori Amos track was something I used to play occasionally on my radio show on KRUI back in 1999 or so. Finally, Daft Punk from France I do enjoy. Technologic is a very commercial track having appeared in an iPod ad, but I love it all the same. But wait! Is there more? Hmmm…you’ll have to listen to find out.

Hey thanks for the list, I'm psyched to here some new cuts. Especially since I've also been enjoying MIA, the Daft Punk lately, and Gotan Project cut is one of my favorites. Thanks for the list!

Releasing this mix a day before the fourth anniversary of 9/11 reminds me of three mixes I made in response to those events:
