Maltese Cross Rock’s Oldest Joke

The Wall Street Journal has a great article about the history of people yelling “Freebird” at concerts. Freebird, of course, is an old Lynyrd Skynyrd song, and calling it out as a request seems to be a staple.

What struck me as interesting about this article is that it traces the history of Freebird back to Chicago of the late 80’s. That’s interesting because the first time I heard someone call “Freebird,” it was our very own Guest Blogger Faust Gertz who happens to be from Chicago. So the question on the table: How did you hear about Freebird, Faust?

Thanks for the trip down Chicago radio memory lane.

I was first encouraged to yell "Freebird" during the lulls of lame shows by Kevin Matthews back when he was on WLUP. I thought it was kind of funny. I eventually grew tired of the bit after hearing KevHeads scream it at every show as a demonstration of allegiance to their puppet master. It is almost as bad as those "Tweety" shouting Wilco fans. In fact, all I can remember about one show Jeff did with Jim O'Rourke is idiot fans constantly squawking "Tweety" through the entire show. Anyway, though it is rather hackneyed, I still occasionally feel the urge to let out a "Freebird" now and then.

Speaking of old WLUP personalities, wasn't Jonathon "JohnnyB" Brandmeier from Fon Du Lac, WI?

What every happened to Garry Meier?
