Have I ever mentioned here how much I still enjoy Trip Shakespeare’s music? They were a little band out of Minneapolis and had a few albums in their day, of which Across the Universe is essential. On that album their best qualities come out — namely their vocal harmonies. Fantastic!
I saw them live once or twice down at my alma mater — and they were a great band live. Lots of kinetic energy and showmanship. They also seemed like pretty cool guys except for the drummer who seemed like a cool gal.
You can find a few MP3 files by Trip Shakespeare over on my music page. Please write to me if you’re interested in hearing more. “Toolmaster of Brainerd” was one of their best songs live, but that album Are You Shakespearienced? isn’t quite as developed as Across the Universe.
So if you’re looking for a band with great harmony and vocal interplay, slightly goofy lyrics, and midwest sensibilities look no further than everyone’s favorite: Trip Shakespeare.

Yeah, I saw Trip at least 20 times in Ames, Iowa. Since it was close to MN, they came through pretty regularly and played "The Maintenance Shop" on campus at ISU. At the time I was living in southern Iowa, and was a 1 1/2 hour drive each way to catch them, but I never missed a show.
Their live show was absolutely electric and always sold out. I even got to meet John Munson and Matt Wilson once before a show. By coincidence I even stayed at the same dive hotel one night after a show (El Rancho).
I too still enjoy the music, and hope someday the brothers will reunite. Although Semisonic is also good, they seem to lack the spark that was always there when the boys were together.
Matt Wilson released an EP/Demo tape called Descender, not long after the parting. Although the production values were, well, bad, it was great. It had all the great TS flavor. I wore that tape out. I still have it and I need to dub it off onto CD, but I actually don't have a tape deck anymore.
I still have Applehead man and Shakespearinced on Vinyl as well as CD and crack them out occasionally to relive those great live shows.
I've seen many, MANY acts in all kinds of venues, big and small. To this day, NOBODY I've seen has captivated an audience like TS.
Maybe I'm getting old, but they just don't make like that any more.
I'm so glad to read two people in the world feel the same way i do about Trip. i saw them so many times in chicago and i still see shows now, but nothing matches Trip for me. i'm still looking...
This is great. To see people still enjoy their music.
I just got done putting ALL my cd's on my computer. I hadn't had any Trip out for awhile so I was playing some (softly cause of the baby). My wife in the other room comes running in --> "Is that Trip Shakespeare? Play Bachelorette!"
We went to KU and saw Trip twice. Once in Lawrence and once in KC. The thing about their shows was that they sounded exactly like their cd's. Hard to do 'cause their music is tight, clean and harmonious.
One thing about the music now is that I almost get emotional listening to it. Maybe cause we were 19 or 20 at the time and it takes you back to younger times. I've got great connotations to their music.
I was reading at www.semisonic.com that there was a mini Trip reunion last Dec. What I would give to see them again. Thanks for the blog.
When I was but a mere lad on the verge of discovering the world under my own matured headlights, still in highschool and still getting my music taste from friends in the grade above me, I was introduced to Trip Shakespeare. About the same time, I was enveloped by the intensely abstract and physically damaging world of psychedelic drugs. I remember "melting into the carpet" with a tape of a Trip Shakespeare album playing in the background.
Years have past, and I live in a different country now, and have absorbed a variety of new musical tastes since then. But recently a desire to hear Trip Shakespeare has awakened within me.
Though I have left mind altering psychedelic substances behind long ago, I still worship the psychedelia encapsuled within the kind of half conscious lyrics and showmanship found in Trip Shakespeare songs. Boy, I can't wait to track those CDs down! The original vinyl albums sleep somewhere in my parents' house back in the states, I imagine...

Hi,
I am also an old Trip Shakespeare fan. Saw them numerous times in St. Cloud, mostly at the Red Carpet. Also saw them at SCSU once. They were awemsome!!
I saw Semisonic in 1998 in New York City of all places. I have been living in New Jersey for nearly seven years now but will be back to MN next month! Can't wait!
Wish Trip would get back together for a reunion. What is Elaine doing these days? Does anyone know?
Memories....
